Effects of Sports on Menstrual Function

Abstract
This paper was provided to clarify the new clinical entity, so-called exercise-associated amenorrhea, which seems to be one of the most interesting subjects of published obstetric and gynecologic articles over past 5 years or so.
As we know, there is a world-wide tendency that significant number of women are increasingly participating in strenuous athletic competition and regular exercise program.
Physicians, especially working in obstetric and gynecologic fields, are faced more and more questions about effects of strenuous physical activities upon reproductive potential including menstrual function.
In general, high intensity athletic performance in many different sports is associated with delayed menarche at puberty and increases frequency of menstrual disorders such as oligoamenorrhea and impaired luteal function in reproductive ages but some controversies exist about it.
The pathophysiologic basis for the exercise-associated menstrual dysfunction in female athletes is not fully understood, however type, intensity and duration of exercise, loss of weight, alteration of percentage body fat, stress, neuroendocrine changes, and so forth are proposed for bases of these phenomena.
As a whole, athletic oligoamenorrhea assumed to be hypothalamic in origin nowadays. But more studies are needed for evaluation of exact nature of exercise-associated amenorrhea.
